(Reuters) – A large warehouse explosion in Beirut killed at the least 100 folks and injured almost 4,000. Lebanese President Michel Aoun stated 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been saved for six years on the port with out security measures.

Beneath are particulars of ammonium nitrate and skilled remark:

* Ammonium nitrate is an industrial chemical generally used in fertilisers and as an explosive for quarrying and mining. It is an oxidiser thought-about comparatively protected if uncontaminated and saved correctly. However it is extraordinarily harmful if contaminated, combined with gasoline or saved unsafely.

* A big amount of ammonium nitrate uncovered to intense warmth can set off an explosion. Storing the chemical close to giant gasoline tanks, in bulk in giant portions and in a poorly-ventilated facility may trigger a large blast. The bigger the amount, the extra danger it should detonate.

“On a scale, this explosion is scaled down from a nuclear bomb rather than up from a conventional bomb,” stated Roland Alford, managing director of Alford Applied sciences, a British firm that specialises in disposal of explosive ordnance. “This is probably up there among the biggest non-nuclear explosions of all time.”

* Specialists have famous the color of the smoke and “mushroom cloud” seen in footage of Tuesday’s blast as attribute of ammonium nitrate explosions.

“Video footage of the incident show initial white-grey smoke followed by an explosion that released a large cloud of red-brown smoke and a large white ‘mushroom cloud’. These indicate that the gasses released are white ammonium nitrate fumes, toxic, red/brown nitrous oxide and water,” stated Stewart Walker from the college of Forensic, Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at Flinders College.

“If you make ammonium nitrate explosive, you shouldn’t get that brown plume. That tells me the oxygen balance was not correct – so it wasn’t mixed as an explosive,” he stated. “The Beirut blast looks like an accident, unless it was arson.”

PAST ACCIDENTS

Among the world’s deadliest industrial accidents have been brought on by ammonium nitrate explosions:

* In 1921, an explosion of ammonium sulphate and nitrate fertiliser on the Oppau plant in Germany killed 565 folks.

* In 1947, a fireplace detonated round 2,300 tonnes of the chemical aboard a vessel within the U.S. port of Texas Metropolis, inflicting a tidal wave. At the least 567 folks have been killed and greater than 5,000 injured.

* In Toulouse, France in 2001, an explosion at an ammonium nitrate depot killed 31 and injured 2,500.

* Ammonium nitrate saved at a Texas fertiliser plant detonated in an explosion that killed 14 and injured about 200 in 2013.

* In 2015, explosions at a warehouse storing ammonium nitrate and different chemical compounds within the Chinese language port of Tianjin killed at the least 116 folks.

* Andrea Sella, professor of Inorganic Chemistry at College Faculty London, stated of the Beirut blast: “The idea that such a quantity would have been left unattended for six years beggars belief, and was an accident waiting to happen.”

USE IN BOMBINGS

Ammonium nitrate may be combined with different substances to make a bomb. It was used in Irish Republican Military (IRA) bombings in London within the Nineties, the 1995 explosion that blew up a federal constructing in Oklahoma Metropolis, killing 168 folks, and the 2002 blasts in Bali nightclubs by which greater than 200 died. Most of the selfmade bombs that have been used towards U.S. troops in Afghanistan contained ammonium nitrate.
