Since 2004, members of the NC State Employees Credit Union (SECU) have been making a difference with just one dollar. Each month they donate $1 to the SECU Foundation and together they have been able to create a life-changing impact on their friends, family, neighbors and loved ones across North Carolina .
A dollar that counts
Some might think that a dollar doesn’t make much of a difference, but the SECU Foundation has proven otherwise. Focused on four primary impact areas – education, housing, health care and social services – the Foundation is dedicated to creating and funding programs that help improve the communities they serve.
Invest in education
In the field of education, the SECU Foundation offers various programs dedicated to providing students with life-changing funding. Through People Helping People® programs, eligible high school and community college students can receive scholarships worth more than $4.5 million, allowing them to pursue their studies at universities or colleges accredited community organizations.
The Foundation also supports the Bridge to Career program, which helps continuing education students at North Carolina’s 58 community colleges obtain the professional qualifications needed for a family-paying career. Additionally, the Public Fellows Internship Program provides eligible undergraduate students from UNC System universities the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and connect with leaders in their local communities.
Advancing health and social services
SECU and the Foundation understand the importance of health and social services. They work closely with organizations such as Healing Transitions and Aces for Autism to create lasting and transformative impact in these areas.
Healing Transitions, a nonprofit organization that serves homeless, uninsured and underserved adults with alcohol and other drug problems, received a $500,000 capital grant. This grant allows Healing Transitions to expand its services, provide more care and educational support to the men and women of North Carolina, and give them hope for a better future.
Similarly, Aces for Autism, a nonprofit in Greenville, North Carolina, received a $1.5 million capital grant. This funding will help them build a new building, increase their capacity and reduce their waiting list for children and families affected by autism. By providing therapeutic and educational support, Aces for Autism creates a safe and nurturing environment for children like Wade, whose lives are forever changed through their services.
Building a better future
In the housing focus area, the SECU Foundation worked with Roof Above, an organization dedicated to ending homelessness through innovative housing solutions. With a $2 million grant from the Foundation and additional funding from partner organizations, Roof Above built an 88-unit permanent affordable housing center and supportive services center in Charlotte. This represents an important step towards ending homelessness and providing a stable living environment for those who need it.
2022 was an incredible year for the SECU Foundation, with more than $235 million donated to organizations across North Carolina. In 2023, they will continue their mission to help those in need and share inspiring stories about the impacts made by their beneficiaries.
Join the movement
None of this would be possible without the generous support and contributions of SECU members. Their donations have changed lives, improved communities, and created a brighter future for North Carolina. Whether it’s a dollar or more, your support can make a significant difference.
Together, let’s continue the mission of NC State Employees Credit Union and the SECU Foundation, making a transformative impact on the lives of those who need it most.
